CAR FACTS BUYING GUIDE

When you have decided on the make and model of the auto you would like to purchase, you should then begin shopping around at different dealers. The best advice is to arm yourself with as much information you can about the particular vehicle you are looking for. There are several resources, like NADA (www.nada.com), that will provide you with invoice pricing. Although these figures will not be final price figures, they will provide you with a good reference. The difference between sticker price and invoice price is your bargaining room. Make sure you do some research on the price of the options you are looking for as well. When you have all of your figures, it’s time to visit the dealers. Choose a dealer by reputation, not advertisements and your individual comfort level. If you feel pushed when at a dealer, leave and visit another. The car should sell itself, not have to be sold by the salesperson.

Timing is another factor to consider. September and October are prime months to buy due to dealers being overstocked and attempting to clear out inventory for new model year autos.

Make sure you visit the dealerships during the day. It is very difficult to view a vehicle after dark and artificial lights can actually help disguise minor flaws such as dents and dings. Have a list of selected items that you are looking for and do not settle for less. It is also important to avoid impulse purchasing. After test driving the vehicle, do not purchase the vehicle right away. Go home, do some other shopping but think about the decision.

When you feel ready to buy, stick to your budget. Do not get caught by tactics like “it’s only $50 more a month”. There is a reason you chose a maximum so stick to it. If you feel pressured in any way, leave and walk away.
